Discussion 4

Topic : We need a 24-hours convenience store, or not

Spenser : neutral / It may be convenient for younger people but older people won't use convenience stores in the middle of the night. she thinks it costs a lot of money to be open 24 hours a day.

Qing long : disagree / It costs a lot of money and she thinks it's not a good idea to have young people working for late night hours.

Question (Q→M)

How often do you use this convenience store?

A. She'll use it every day.

Karen : M /

Matilda : agree / ATM /  There is an ATM in the convenience store, which is useful when you need to withdraw money in the middle of the night at a moment's notice. Older people may not use them, but they are very useful for younger people. She thinks she'll use it every day. She thinks that the shortage of workers can be made up by cloning humans.

Julia : agree / She's a career woman and wants to buy food in the middle of the night, so it would be nice if it was open 24 hours a day. She is a little scared when she returns home in the middle of the night, so she feels safer if the 24-hour convenience store is open. She thinks it's not a problem for late night workers because the wages are higher. If they work late at night and go home early in the morning, it's not dangerous. If we're afraid of the danger, we can use a QR code to restrict entry.

Julia said she was afraid of the dark on the way home, but then she could put up a streetlight. A streetlight would cost less money and would be more purposeful.

Anna

Now that we're discussing 24-hour convenience stores, I don't think we should be talking about security issues.

A 24-hour convenience store is a necessity, so we decided to build it

My opinion

I think the good thing about this discussion was that it was resolved unanimously. It was great to see Karen summarize everyone's opinions in a way that was easy to understand and check often to make sure she understood the questions.

However, there were a few questions about the discussion.

First of all, regarding the issue Matilda mentioned about turning cloned humans into midnight workers, I don't think this is something we can decide on. Since cloned humans are also human, I think it would be wrong to use cloned humans to compensate for the lack of midnight workers.

Next, regarding the QR code Julia mentioned, I think it will take a lot of money and time to distribute the QR code to all of the people and get everyone to use it. I don't see any benefit to using them other than that they are safe.

The last thing I was thinking about most is that convenience stores are a business. They were arguing about safety, workers and users, but they weren't considering the views of the convenience store management. The most important thing about being open 24 hours a day was how much profit they could make. I thought that they should consider the cost of staying open late at night or the profit they would make by staying open late at night.
